Some of Karina’s favourite kids food reviews

Are they worth 4 stars? The short answer- no!

Are they ok in the lunchbox sometimes - yes!

My thoughts:

✅ Low in salt
✅ Moderate fibre
✅ iron and nutrient fortified

❌ Almost 20% sugar
❌ Way too many ingredients including additives
❌ Highly processed
❌ High GI (fast release sugar)

The summary- a sometimes food that doesn’t offer your kids much nutrition aside from a bit of iron and fast sugar!

kids+nutrition+food+review

Are they any good for a “cheat night” dinner?

✅ 91% potato
✅ Less than 5 % Fat
✅ Low in saturated fat
✅ Less than 0.1g trans fat (bad fat)
✅ Lowish in salt - 251mg per 100g
✅ Some dietary fibre (2.1g per serve)
✅ They use paprika, onion and garlic powder and black pepper for natural flavour
✅ Low in sugar
✅ Made in Australia

❌ Not gluten free

🥔 I can’t find many faults in these aside from the canola oil, which some prefer not to use.

🥔 These are a good option for that quick easy “cheat” meal.

🥔 The natural flavourings mean they taste good without needing to add more salt into them.

Nutritious Foods

Top them with peanut butter and banana for a yummy breakfast or snack option.

Some people view them as unhealthy, so are they?

Low in added sugar
Good source of carbohydrate
Reasonable source of protein
Some fibre (more in the wholemeal option)
Uses Iodised salt
Made in Australia

Does contain preservatives 282 and 234
Is higher in salt (sodium) compared to bread (700mg vs 400mg per 100g)

On the whole I think these are still ok to pop in the trolley from time to time….as long as they are part of a balanced intake and aren’t eaten 3 meals a day!

“Karina has a fabulous way of making me feel like I’m doing a good job, which I love”

”Highly recommend Karina. She gives excellent advice on how to get nutrients into extremely picky eaters - and great recipes to help with that. She also has a great meal plan which I've found much better than any other meal plan from picky-eater professionals. It is easy and achievable and caters to most tastes. The food reviews on her Instagram account are great - they are honest about the limitations we face as busy mums and she doesn't make me feel bad about the "quick" options I sometimes give to my kids! Karina has a really fabulous way of making me feel like I'm doing a good job, which I love. And, she is just a really lovely person and easy to chat to, which helps if you have a private session with her!” Jessica Collins, online consultation

“I’m forever grateful, I was overwhelmed and stressed and now I’m totally smashing it!”

”It's not often that you find a health practitioner who understands your needs so completely and resolves all your concerns with ease. Karina has helped me to become a confident new mum and for that I'm forever grateful. Introducing solids to my six-month-old son was very overwhelming and stressful, but now I'm totally smashing it! I highly recommend Karina to any mum ( or dad, new and experienced) who wants to introduce solids better with gut health in mind” Nasia Christie, online consultation

 Frequently Asked Questions

  • A paediatric dietitian is a healthcare professional who specialises in the dietary needs of children from infancy through adolescence. Their role is to assess the nutritional status of children, considering growth, development, and specific medical or health concerns. The paediatric dietitian creates personalized nutrition plans based on the child’s unique needs, whether it’s managing food allergies, picky eating, weight issues, or specific medical conditions like diabetes or digestive disorders. Additionally, they work closely with parents and caregivers to educate them on how to provide balanced, nutritious meals that support their child’s overall health. The goal of a paediatric dietitian is to promote long-term healthy eating habits that will benefit the child as they grow.

  • A child should be referred to a paediatric dietician or paediatric nutritionist when there are concerns about their growth, development, or eating habits. Common reasons for referral include failure to thrive, underweight or overweight issues, and specific nutritional deficiencies such as iron or calcium. If a child has food allergies, intolerances, or a medical condition requiring specialised dietary management, such as celiac disease, a referral to a kids dietician is essential. Additionally, children who are picky eaters, refuse certain food groups, or have difficulty transitioning to solid foods can benefit greatly from seeing a paediatric nutritionist who can help with strategies to improve their eating patterns. In some cases, even behavioral or emotional issues related to food can warrant a referral to ensure the child is receiving the proper nutrition for healthy development.

  • When a child is a picky eater or struggles to follow dietary recommendations, a paediatric dietitian uses a variety of strategies to make food more accessible and enjoyable for the child. Understanding the root cause of picky eating is crucial, so the dietician will often begin with a thorough assessment of the child’s eating habits, food preferences, and any underlying health issues.

From there, the paediatric nutritionist creates a plan that gradually introduces new foods in a non-threatening way, using methods like food chaining, fun presentations, or involving the child in meal preparation.

They work closely with parents to set realistic goals and teach them techniques to encourage healthy eating at home, such as establishing structured meal times, offering a variety of foods without pressure, and avoiding the use of food as a reward.

For children with difficulty following dietary recommendations due to medical conditions or sensory issues, the paediatric dietitian collaborates with other healthcare professionals, such as speech therapists or occupational therapists, to address the child’s needs holistically.

  • After the initial consultation, follow-up with a paediatric dietitian/ nutritionist may be required depending on the situation. This can help to monitor dietary changes made, assess progress, provide support with any challenges, and adjust the child’s nutrition plan as needed.

A paediatric dietitian provides continuous guidance to parents, helping them navigate any hurdles they face in implementing dietary changes at home. This follow-up ensures that children stay on track with their nutritional goals, and it allows the dietician to offer ongoing encouragement and practical solutions for both parents and children. Moreover, a paediatric dietician provides educational resources, meal ideas, and sometimes hands-on support, such as cooking demonstrations or workshops, to help families build confidence in managing their child’s nutrition long-term.
